Hello HFO Community,
As we kick off this new year, all of us at Hunger Fighters Oregon are especially thankful for our many volunteers, donors, supporting organizations, and partners who play a vital role in helping us tackle food insecurity in our community. Together, we served over 2,200 individuals in 2024, 25% more than in 2023. Our 2024 Impact Report is attached (click the image below to enlarge, download, or print), and I’d like to share a few highlights.
2024 was HFO’s ‘infrastructure year’—we stabilized leadership and staffing, built crucial processes and fortified operations. These helped grow partnerships, enlist and train volunteers and distribute 54,000 pounds of fresh gleaned food and produce from generous sponsors and community organizations. Healthy, nutritious perishables take extra effort to secure and manage.
They help round out the shelf-stable goods contributed by individuals and schools, civic groups and businesses who hosted dozens of food drives that helped keep shelves stocked with household and personal hygiene items that SNAP benefits don't cover, and pantry staples like tuna, beans, grains and pasta.
HFO is a safety net for our community. The data shows an average guest only visits a few times a year, and about half the people experiencing food insecurity in our community are not eligible for SNAP benefits. HFO helps fill the gaps between paychecks and when other expenses—a car or home repair, a medical bill, etc.—reduce a grocery budget. We are committed to filling this gap as long as it exists. To do that, we worked to secure more grant funding, including a significant multi-year grant from Clackamas County to help meet the rising number of people experiencing food insecurity. We also began partnering with community groups in new ways to help them in times of crisis. For example, we made emergency food kits for seniors, tested our first off-site pantry pop-up, among other new programs and partnerships.
Lastly, we capped 2024 by crafting our first three-year strategic plan, to make sure that we continue to be here for all who may need a hand in future. We are so grateful to all who donate their time, talents and resources in support of our mission—thank you!
