Our Mission
Our mission is to provide reliable access to nutritious food and essential hygiene items in an inclusive, accepting environment.
DEI Statement
Hunger Fighters recognizes that food insecurity and hunger disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities, and that food insecurity will only be eliminated when its root causes are addressed. Our pantry is open to anyone, which means that our interactions, practices and policies must seek to uphold the highest standards of DEI principles. This is a prioritized area of growth, repair and learning for Hunger Fighters.
Our History
Hunger Fighters Oregon first started in 2014 as an after-school club at Lake Oswego Junior High. The club was student run and met once a week to plan food drives and other school fundraisers. During the course of three years, the Hunger Fighters Oregon club raised enough food and money to provide 10,000 meals to people in need. In 2016, Hunger Fighters Oregon became an official nonprofit organization.
Hunger Fighters Oregon currently operates a food pantry at 4 Monroe Parkway, Suite A. This food pantry distributes basic food and hygiene items to families and individuals in the Lake Oswego community.
Why Hunger?
Hunger Fighters Oregon knows that even in Lake Oswego there are people who struggle with food insecurity. According to the Oregon Department of Education, 599 students in the Lake Oswego School District qualify for free or reduced lunch meals. Of course, these numbers do not even include the family members of these students who also struggle with hunger. These statistics shocked the founders of Hunger Fighters Oregon and are what eventually led to the formation of the Hunger Fighters Oregon club.
Testimonials
I grew up in a home where food was abundant, and as an adult, I've been passionate about volunteering for the cause of food insecurity.
In 2017, my world took an enexpected turn when I experienced a job lay-off and cancer diagnosis in the same year. One year without income became two; savings depleted, I turned to Hunger Fighters Oregon for help. At first, I felt uneasy asking for help as I was always on the "giving" side. Yet the incredible warmth and respect of the HFO volunteers put me at ease.
Thank you, HFO, for your food pantry, compassion and kindness these past few months. So very grateful for your help and so proud that in our affluent Lake Oswego community, people like you are committed to helping those in need.
